How reverse osmosis works

Reverse osmosis (RO) pushes water through a membrane with extremely fine pores. Water gets through. Most of the dissolved minerals and salts don't, and they're rinsed down the drain. The filtered water waits in a small tank under the sink until you open the faucet.

It happens in five stages, in this order:

  1. Sediment prefilter. Catches sand, grit and rust flakes before they reach the finer filters.
  2. Carbon prefilter. Reduces chlorine first, which helps protect the membrane.
  3. Second carbon prefilter. A second pass, so the membrane gets the cleanest possible water.
  4. Reverse osmosis membrane. The heart of the system. Water passes through; most dissolved minerals and salts are rinsed down the drain.
  5. Polishing filter. A last carbon stage between the storage tank and your faucet.

What it's certified for

Before you buy, we send you the exact model's certification listing so you can see every item it's certified to reduce. We only claim what's on that listing.

If lead is your reason for looking, ask for the certificate first. In Chicago, also request the free lead test kit from the city.

What to expect

  1. Install

The system fits in the cabinet under your kitchen sink and connects to your existing cold line. The faucet goes in a standard faucet hole. Granite or quartz may need a hole drilled, which we price on your quote.

  2. Check

We measure dissolved solids at the new faucet and at your regular tap. Before we leave, the new faucet has to read under 10% of your tap water.

  3. Upkeep

Filters change about once a year, the membrane less often. We'll text you a reminder when it's time, and a line to your fridge or ice maker can be added.

Drinking water questions

What does the $699 add-on cover?

The same 5-stage drinking-water system that comes with the City Water Package, added to a Well & Hard Water Package. That includes the faucet, the install on your existing cold line, and a dissolved-solids test before we leave.

Can I get just the drinking-water system?

Not right now. We don't sell the drinking-water system on its own. It comes with the City Water Package, or adds $699 to a Well & Hard Water Package. If a drinking-water system is all you want, we're not the right fit today.

How often do the drinking-water filters change?

About once a year for the filters, and less often for the membrane, depending on how much water you use. We'll text you a reminder when it's time.

Does reverse osmosis send water down the drain?

Yes. As it filters, an RO system rinses the membrane and sends that rinse water down the drain. It only happens while the system is refilling its small storage tank, not all day.

Can it feed my fridge or ice maker?

Yes. It takes an extra tubing run, which we price on your written quote before you sign.
